Ever been frustrated as part of a ‘team’ that doesn’t really function as a team? Today’s workplace is all about teamwork and collaboration. Effective teamwork can boost both productivity and satisfaction… and reduce costs. But how do you create effective teams? And how do you manage a team that isn’t performing well despite competent, qualified people? Or take action when team spirit is jeopardised by difficult working relationships? These are questions that Pulford Media’ training manager – Liz Tayfun – and her colleague Sarah Clark – address in workshops they co-facilitate in Geneva and London. Liz and Sarah are both accredited trainers of the Belbin Team Roles™ theory, developed from Meredith Belbin’s research into the factors that make teams succeed or fail. Belbin identified nine clusters of behaviour (Team Roles) that contribute to a team’s effectiveness, and argues it is the mix and complementarity of these different Roles within a team that are a primary determinant of team effectiveness. Liz enthusiastically says: “Our aim in using the Belbin methodology is to give individuals a better understanding of their preferred Roles, and a respect for the unique contribution that each can bring to the team.” Worldwide, many organisations in both public and private sectors are using the Belbin approach to enhance individual and team performance.
