Robert Steel had a distinguished academic and writing career during which he was vice-chancellor of the University of Wales, 1979-81. Towards the end of his life, Professor Steel prepared for wider circulation these letters home to his fiancee, later his wife. The task has been sensitively completed by his son-in-law, Colin Johnson.
